Listening Posts
Sound Installation
Art Prospect—annual festival of public art
St. Petersburg, Russia
September 2016

This covert sound installation used location-based media to create a dialogue between participants and their urban surroundings. There were six Listening Posts — specially marked utility boxes — that are positioned on the streets throughout the festival site within the Admiralteysky district of St. Petersburg, each with a headphone jack at their base. Once located, participants could plug their headphones in to listen to soundscapes that explored the stories and memories attached to the nearby sites.

The narratives and themes ranged from an imagination of the land before the city existed to a historical text on Russian shipbuilding methods, and an exploration of the city as described in Russian literature.
